|
|
We opened our season for sailfish the same date as last year. We had plans to open the 20th of December, however, due to weather we had to post pone it for two days.
We had done some scouting runs to the north side of Isla Mujeres and we saw some schools of bait along with a lot of Spanish mackerel and bonitos feeding off the bait balls but no sailfish during the first two weeks of December. The reports where one or two sailfish here and there nothing worth running too long for.
With a customer committed for sailfish only we scheduled the run for the 20th of December. We had to cancel and go the 22nd as we did last year.
Being the 3rd day of the hard north winds we felt more comfortable with the outcome of the day as the wind blows the bait balls tighter and pushes the sailfish closer.
The run was 45 min from Cancun to the first sign of bait. The screen on the fish finder marked some bait at mid water and we dropped some dredges and 6 lines but as we got closer to the balls of bait everything at once was being hit by mackerels. After doing the experiment a couple of times we picked up everything and ran a few additional miles northbound and started trolling lines only and plastic daisy chains sizing the amount of mackerel in the area we found birds feeding on the bait on the surface and dropped dredges again getting to the birds and found smaller bait ball with sails below.
Immediately we had a double header on the first turn. We quickly released the two for the next turn getting a triple header. One came unhooked after a few minutes then the second one. We released one out the triple-header. The fish went down and continued trolling. Minutes later mackerel again cutting everything that was being trolled.
The down time rigging and re rigging after mackerel was a killer but we managed to release 7 out of 11 sailfish. Bait balls are getting bigger but we have a lot of Spanish mackerel in the area along with bonitos. The sailfish bait is getting better especially after the north winds.
We have some picturess from the trip,
Cheers to sailfish.

We had a blast fishing with your hard working crew and
enjoyed the entire day We will be back to fish again with you.
Speaking of that you were going to let me know the best 2 tournaments
and the dates. I have 3 men that have never caught a Blue or White
Marlin and I have told them if any boat can do it, it is The Kianah.
When is the very best time to get into Blue's??
Again thanks for a great time.........
