We are starting our trolling season north east of Isla Mujeres and the tournaments in the area will start the 3rd weekend of May with Cozumel being the first.
The general report for the main season for sailfish was a complete disappointment due to a few factors that came in to place with wind being the worst one. Usually the winter and the winter sailfish bait is north of Isla Mujeres and is awesome due to the famous “20 fish” are normal just like Marlin magazine says, however, this year the winter never came around Cancun and Isla the usual northerly winds that hit the area during January, February, and March was very rare.
Personally we prefer to fish during 5 to 6 foot waves blowing from the north and fully explain the conditions of a day of fishing than the long lasting southern winds. This type of wind doesn’t help the bait on the area, rather it blows it very far away and makes the run to sailfish grounds very long. We heard some American vessels running as far as 60 miles north of Cancun that is 3.5 hrs of running each way.
On the positive side we had some bait that held the area but due to the fast current of the water being blown by the wind in the same direction they were close to the bottom most of the time. The surface temperature did not help either. We had very few bait balls on the surface and the usual tale tell signs of flying cormorants diving after the bait was very scarce at least in the first 40 miles north of Cancun.
We did not have the usual bait that we expect at that time of the year neither the famous 20 sailfish per day. We only had those numbers after a solid 3 days of hard blowing northerly winds but we only had 4 to 5 cold fronts during 3 months and not very strong.
Our average we were getting between 5 to 10 shots per day at a sailfish . They were very long days of fishing in fact. The trolling season sounds and looks more promising now. The big mahi mahi’s are in the area. We have some white marlin and sails not very many blues, however, other species bring it to a more and easier, faster pace.
This week we had a lot of small black fin tuna between 12 to 25 lbs. We
averaged 10 to 15 per day along with Dorado’s and Wahoo’s and 2 to 5
shots at a billfish per day.
Nice fishing. |
